Now, more than 35 years later, David Brom is free. Thanks to changes in Minnesota law, juveniles tried as adults no longer have to serve the same mandatory minimums as adult offenders. Instead of spending life in prison, David became eligible for parole after serving just over three decades. In 2025, at 53 years old, he walked out of prison.
The decision has sparked outrage and debate across Minnesota and beyond. Can someone who wiped out their family in such a brutal way ever truly be rehabilitated? Or does some violence go so far that forgiveness — and freedom — should never be an option?
