In this video we teardown a TR690 continuously variable transmission from a 2012 Subaru Outback to see what's inside and how it works! It has 91,000km and was already suffering from torque converter failure, as evidenced by the clutch material wearing down in the converter.

Torque converter failures were common on earlier CVT's due to the solenoids sticking causing them to remain locked up. Replacement is expensive as the entire valve body must be replaced as an assembly.

However, what's most interesting is that this is a longitudinally oriented CVT, with an integrated front propeller shaft and differential with Subaru's symmetric AWD System. This system uses a clutch pack to engage the rear wheels for a part time AWD setup, where-as older 5AT Subaru's used a center differential which sent power at all times to all four wheels.

This transmission uses a sturdy chain instead of a push belt found on many economy vehicles.
