Magic has often been associated with religion but is typically viewed as contrary to both conventional religions and scientific methods, such as those used in medicine. Individuals accused of being witches were frequently persecuted for allegedly worshipping the devil.

These characteristics have occasionally drawn the interest of artists to witchcraft and magic. In early religious art, they were depicted as adversaries of Christianity; in the seventeenth century, Salvator Rosa was known for his witch-themed paintings; during the Romantic era of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, artists like Goya, Blake, and Fuseli delved into witchcraft as a counterpoint to science and rationalism, with Shakespeare’s Macbeth's three witches being a notable subject.
