"Tears in Heaven" is a song by Eric Clapton, written about the death of his four-year-old son, Conor.
On March 20, 1991, Conor fell from a 53rd-floor apartment in New York City and tragically passed away. Following this heartbreaking event, Clapton withdrew and isolated himself for a while, but eventually he started working again, using music as a way to cope with his grief. During this period, he co-wrote "Tears in Heaven" and collaborated with Will Jennings. Jennings described the song as "It's very personal and sad, and in my experience, there’s nothing quite like it."
In a 1992 interview, Clapton said that the song had been in his mind for some time but took on a new meaning as it became part of the film's soundtrack. He mentioned, “It could be about Conor, but it’s also a part of the film.” In another interview, he shared, “I almost unconsciously used music as a healing tool for myself, and it really helped me to heal.”

Clapton's career successes in the 1970s were in stark contrast with the struggles he coped with in his personal life, which was troubled by romantic longings and drug and alcohol addiction. Still infatuated with Pattie Boyd (George Harrison's wife) and torn by his friendship with Harrison, he withdrew from recording and touring to isolation in his Surrey residence. He nursed a heroin addiction, which resulted in a lengthy career hiatus interrupted only by performing at Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh benefit shows in New York in August 1971; there, he passed out on stage, was revived, and managed to finish his performance.
