Steve Bannon says Canadians should “rethink” Trump’s offer to become 51st state

Speaking with Global’s Ashleigh Stewart about the looming 25 per cent tariffs set to be imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump in March, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon suggests Canadians are misinterpreting the threat, and that it is “much deeper” than making Canadians pay premiums. In fact, he suggests it’s a “genius” geopolitical move.

With active efforts in the U.S. to eventually annex Greenland, reclaim the Panama Canal and now, supposedly secure Canada’s northern Arctic border, Bannon believes Trump is trying to establish a north-south economic and military corridor.

“Canada’s greatest defence is about to become your softest underbelly,” Bannon told Global News.

To get access to the U.S. “golden market,” Bannon said Canada is “either going to have to shift [its] manufacturing here, or going to have to pay a toll,” further suggesting Canadians should “rethink” Trump’s previous offers to absorb it as a 51st state.
