The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday held its Dhaka divisional rally at Golapbagh field in the capital by dispelling all speculations and braving numerous obstacles.
Thousands of people joined the rally a day after getting permission to use the venue amid arrest of the party leaders and activists during the ongoing countrywide police drive. They gathered at the venue with processions, wearing colourful T-shirts, chanting slogans and carrying portraits of the party founder Ziaur Rahman, chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
The party’s two senior leaders –secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas – were arrested from their homes in Dhaka only a day ago, on Friday.
The party held their mass rally while its central office was kept closed by the police following December 7 clash between police the activists of the BNP that left a BNP activist shot dead and scores injured at Naya Paltan.
The police also kept the office adjacent road closed on Saturday for the fourth consecutive day.
A huge number of police personnel were kept deployed at different points of the city and the city dwellers had to endure police checking while passing by the roads.
