Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and with the uptick in tensions between China and the United States, more Taiwanese are seeing an attack by China on the island as likely – that’s 39% of survey respondents recently. And going by a March 2022 poll by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation, 56% are sceptical that the US will send troops in defence of Taiwan.
Those concerns have fuelled an increase in the number of private citizens signing up for urban warfare training at places like Polar Light Training centre, run by a military veteran. Military service in Taiwan is only 4 months long, and many are of the view this is inadequate for training in the skills of warfare. In the event of an invasion, “we got to prepare ourselves not to win, but to survive,” said one citizen drawing on the example of the Ukraine people.
