Future Supply-Chains of Medicinal Plants: From the Garden to the Blockchain - A Conceptual Overview and Critique of Different Value-Chain Models in the 'Fourth Industrial Revolution'

The talk will be looking at future supply-chain of botanical products, in this context we can think about it with regard to psychedelics. Giving a brief analysis around the growing popularity of medicinal natural products and supply-chain issues with quality control, sustainability and ethical sourcing that is not just restricted to psychedelic plants but is a growing concern across the wider botanical product and food industry. I'd like to give an overview looking at traditional supply-chains such as that of small scale wild collection and garden / community based supply-chains all the way through large scale agriculture and wild harvest. Hoping to provide some key information on emerging concepts and narratives as well as an overview of the different issues, challenges and solutions that we face as the demand grows for medicinal plants.\

Zack Bellman’s academic background is in biological neuroscience from the University of Sussex and a masters in Drug Sciences (specialising in the ethnopharmacy of cannabis) from the University College London School of Pharmacy. Currently a PhD candidate in Pharmacognosy, topics of research include medicinal natural products chemistry, blockchain, supply-chains, medical cannabis, psychoactive plants, science communication and education.
