The Amazing Spider-Man is a 2012 superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name. It is the first installment in The Amazing Spider-Man film series. Directed by Marc Webb, the film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwendolyne Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/Lizard, Denis Leary as George Stacy, Martin Sheen as Ben Parker, and Sally Field as May Parker. The film was released on July 3, 2012.
The film spawned one sequel: The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was released on May 2, 2014. This film was intended to spawn two more sequels: The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 in 2018. Using the concept of the multiverse, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Spider-Man: No Way Home features the return of Andrew Garfield and Rhys Ifans as Spider-Man and Lizard respectively.
Peter was born to Richard and Mary Parker in August, 1995. In his early childhood years, Peter lived a very happy life with them, known to prefer sandwiches without crust, and to sleep with a little light on at night. Peter also met and befriended Harry Osborn at his primary school, and the two spent much of their time together.
Peter Benjamin Parker[6] is the superhero known as the Amazing Spider-Man[7] or simply Spider-Man[1], and is the son of Richard and Mary Parker. Orphaned at the age of seven[8], Peter was raised by his aunt and uncle over the course of the next few years. Parker's search for answers about the mystery of his parents and their deaths eventually drove him to investigating the establishment of Oscorp, having learned that their employee, Dr. Curt Connors, had been close friends with his father.
In 2013, Peter Parker’s life changed when he was bitten by a genetically modified spider at Oscorp, giving him powers like super strength, speed, and wall-crawling. Since his powers didn’t fill the emptiness he felt about his parents’ mysterious disappearance, Peter discovered that his father had once worked with Dr. Curt Connors at Oscorp on cross-species genetics, a project meant to cure disabilities like Connors’ missing arm. However, their experiments led Connors to transform into the Lizard, who wreaked havoc on New York. Peter managed to stop him, with help from Gwen Stacy and her father, Captain Stacy, who died in the fight. Devastated, Peter promised to protect Gwen by staying away from her, but their bond made it hard to keep that promise.
Over time, Peter became a media sensation as Spider-Man, even though his crime-fighting often clashed with the police. Haunted by visions of Captain Stacy, he and Gwen eventually broke up. At the same time, his childhood friend Harry Osborn re-entered his life, desperate for a cure to a genetic illness that only Spider-Man’s blood might heal. Peter refused, fearing the dangers, leading Harry down a path of rage against Spider-Man. Harry soon teamed up with Electro, a former Oscorp employee turned supervillain. With Gwen’s help, Peter defeated Electro, but Harry’s attack on Peter resulted in Gwen’s tragic death. Broken, Peter abandoned his role as Spider-Man, drowning in grief and guilt, until he found strength in Gwen’s final words to keep going by defeating the Rhino, though he would still be haunted by Gwen's death for the next decade.
10 years after Gwen's death, Peter found himself in an alternate universe[n 1], teaming up with two other alternate Spider-Men to cure villains from his own world, including alternate versions of Connors and Electro. In the process, he saved one of the other Spider-Men’s loved ones, giving him closure over Gwen’s loss. Returning to his own universe, Peter felt a renewed sense of peace, ready to keep fighting as Spider-Man.
