"On the Road Somewhere" also known as "Got a Mule to Ride" (Ralph Stanley) and "Bottled in Bond." This is one of those bawdy, early blues banjo songs that emerged among railroad workers, hobos, &c. and circulated in southern Appalachian lumber camps, coal camps, and so on.
I learned my version from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. When George sang it for me years ago he mentioned, "Those boys from over in Virginia recorded that one," referring to Carter and Ralph Stanley. The same song is known in West Virginia as "Bottled in Bond." My instrument is an 1880s J.B. Schall banjo tuned two or three frets below gCGCD.
