manfred albrecht freiherr von richtofen, known in english as baron von richtofen, was a fighter pilot with the german air force during world war 1. he is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. richthofen was shot down and killed near vaux-sur-somme on 21 april 1918. there has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. he remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films, and other media, predominantly under the colloquial nickname "the red baron".

simo häyhä was a finnish military sniper in world war II during the 1939-1940 winter war against the soviet union. he used a finnish-produced m/28-30, a variant of the mosin–nagant rifle, and a suomi/-31 submachine gun. He is believed to have killed over 500 men during the winter war (including 259 killed by sniper rifle), one of the highest number of sniper kills in any major war. However, some historian questions this number, because häyhä was one of the leading themes of finnish propaganda, and sources from his unit pointed out that one half of his kill were probable, but unconfirmed.
