It seems like everywhere you look you witness to the rainbow dressed rapper 6ix9ine somewhere with a catchy song and a controversial story in the headlines. But just three years ago, this level of recognition was possessed by someone completely different. If you were listening to mainstream rap music back in 2015, you had no choice but to be well- aware of the Paterson New Jersey rapper/singer Fetty Wap. With his style of music that he referred to as “ignorant R&B,” Fetty slapped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart backwards when he released his debut singles “Trap Queen” that reached number two and was certified 7x Platinum in the United States alone.

But then Fetty Wap’s unprecedented success killed any notion of him being a one-hit wonder as he continued with a long line of U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart smashes like “679” (featuring Remy Boyz), “My Way (featuring Monty), “Again,” and “Wake Up.” With his self-titled double Platinum album on 300 Entertainment, it seemed like Fetty could do no wrong—until his impact sort of quietly disappeared. Now, with the loud and multi-colored rapper 6ix9ine following a similar path of fast-forwarded fame and chart-climbing tracks, does 6ix9ine risk becoming the next Fetty Wap in a line of came-and-went rappers?
