The Metro series started with the post-apocalyptic fiction novel 'Metro 2033' written by author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It was released online for free as an E-book, and became an interactive experiment, drawing in thousands of readers worldwide. Subsequently, it was published in hardcover in Russia, and the United States in 2005 and 2010 respectively.
The game follows the story of the eponymous book and the events transpire in the fictional year 2033.
