Ian Curtis died on 18 May 1980, just two days before Joy Division were set to tour the U.S. The remaining members — Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris — decided to continue but under a new name, New Order, as a way to mark a fresh start. By mid-1980, they had begun rehearsing and writing again, with Gillian Gilbert joining later that year. Their debut single, Ceremony, was released in March 1981 — less than a year after Curtis’s death. It was a fast but thoughtful transition, honouring the past while moving forward with something new.
