I have many, many more thoughts on Anohana, but this OST is just the beginning of hopefully a series of OSTs that I’ll be doing from the show in order of how emotional they each get me. And of course, it’ll culminate in an arrangement of Secret Base, so stick around for that (even if it’s months in the future)!
Dear Love ~ When I First Met You has such an innocent, calm atmosphere. It recalls the lazy summer days of childhood spent with friends playing tag, video games, or sports. It has an incredibly warm, rosy tinge to the whole picture and invokes deep feelings of nostalgia. It’s simply beautiful.
And as a quick note on the arrangement: I’m taking the Anohana OSTs as essentially practice since they’re very piano heavy and therefore have a larger margin of error because in the worst case scenario I can just transcribe note for note. But they’re also slightly repetitive at points (like with the repeat in Dear Love) if played with just the piano, so the extra challenge is figuring out how to incorporate the variations that the other instruments provide.
For Dear Love, I kept the first time through as close to the original as I could manage because it just sounded good, but it did require some work to get the guitar melody to sit right with the piano. But on the second time through, the addition of a pad and some string elements increased the size of the sound and therefore the energy, so I had to figure out a way to do that, too. In the end, I decided to add more movement, which is why there are many more sixteenths in the left hand.
And as a performance note, playing these from the sheets gives me time to rest a bit and prepare for my bigger stuff, which is really nice. That’s not to say that I didn’t try when recording this, but it was really nice to be able to just practice a bit over the course of a few weeks when preparing other things and then just sit down and record.
It’s also an opportunity for me to practice playing slow things because I’m still not too good at maintaining phrasing and movement when the tempo is slow, which you can kinda hear in this performance.
And, of course, I get to have a big case of the feels when playing this, too, so it’s a win-win-win.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed my arrangement of Dear Love ~ When I First Met You from Anohana! Anohana is still one of my favorite anime of all, and I’m really happy that I can engage with it in this way.
Oh and no outro because I know this is kinda like background music that people just put on, and me talking disrupts that flow :)
Until next time!
