Center For Cassette Studies
We are Jim and Karen. Karen is from Adelaide, Australia and lived in Chicago for many years, working at Facets Video, Tower Records, and The Brown Elephant. Jim is from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and has DJed on and off since 1989, initially postpunk, garage, girl groups, and disco on WVUA. Center for Cassette Studies started in 2014, as a bi-weekly at The Tannery on East Burnside, spinning mainly 60s-70s international women singers and soul 45s. Karen joined in 2016, bringing expertise in African music, free jazz, and krautrock. We share a mutual passion for weird synth records and foreign-language covers. The radio show went live during Freeform Portland’s first show cycle, in Spring 2016.
