The APS is an X-ray light source, and scientists use its ultrabright beams to examine the structures of samples. This research helps build tougher materials, develop next-generation batteries and solar cells, and fight infectious diseases. Advances in technology left the APS in need of a comprehensive upgrade to remain a world-leading facility, and that upgrade is nearly complete.
On July 17, 2024, elected officials joined leaders from the Department of Energy and Argonne to dedicate the upgraded APS. The new facility will generate X-ray beams that are up to 500 times brighter, enabling scientists to examine materials at scales previously unimaginable. This will lead to innovations and discoveries that will help us face the energy challenges ahead.
