For decades, a small patch of international waters in the Sea of Okhotsk was Russia’s biggest legal headache. Known as The Peanut Hole, this area existed due to a loophole in international law, making it a free-for-all fishing zone for foreign fleets. Countries like Poland, China, Japan, Korea, Bulgaria, and Ukraine took full advantage of this, sending hundreds of ships to harvest the rich marine life. But in 2014, Russia finally closed the loophole and claimed the Peanut Hole as part of its exclusive economic zone. Watch how this legal battle played out!

This area here was Russia’s biggest nightmare. You see, according to international law the exclusive economic zone of a country can span 200 nautical miles from the coastline. This lead to a strange situation here in The Sea of Okhotsk. Being surrounded by Russian territory on all sides, most of it falls within the 200 nautical miles range of the Russian EEZ except for this area called The Peanut Hole. This mean that The Peanut Hole is actually international waters.
In 1990s, other countries discovered this legal technicality and decided to take advantage of it. A fleet of polish vessels sailed half of the planet to the Peanut Hole to raid the area for fish. This was also done by the Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Bulgarians and Ukrainians, and soon, the peanut Hole was eventually full of hundreds of non Russian fishing ships.
In 2014, Russia managed to obtained the legal extension of its EEZ to cover the Peanut Hole, putting and end to the foreign fishing raids it the region.
