Colin Scott and his sister Sable ventured into a restricted area of Yellowstone National Park to do what was called "hot-potting," or soaking in a hot spring.
According to authorities, there have been somewhere around 142 injuries due to hot geysers. Some have drowned, while others have experienced burns. Unfortunately for a 23-year-old individual, Colin Scott, it was a tragic fall into a scalding hot geyser. Officials suggest that Scott was attempting an unauthorized activity known as "hot potting" just prior to the incident. Hot potting involves illegally soaking in the park's hot springs. Although the official report did not explicitly name this activity in relation to Scott's case, a park official mentioned that such actions could have contributed to his unfortunate demise. Yellowstone National Park officials emphasize the dangers of venturing beyond designated safety areas. Despite the allure of the boiling hot water, visitors are urged to stay on designated paths and boardwalks for their own safety. Investigators believe Scott strayed from these safe zones, ultimately slipping and falling into the geyser, where the water temperature can reach up to 200°F. Video captured on Scott's phone documented the moment of his fall into the geyser, along with his sister's brave attempts to save him. However, authorities made the decision not to disclose this footage.
Although a sad story, it’s one to consider when visiting Yellowstone National Park.
