Talking Phil Spector, from the Teddy Bears to the Ramones. His wall of sound, The Beatles and so much more...
Phil Spector had his fist hit, as producer, writer and artist, with the Teddy Bears' To Know Him Is to Love Him in 1958.
In 1960 and '61 he was a house producer at Atlantic Records. It was there on 23 February 1961 that he produced the original version of Twist and Shout with the Top Notes.
He set up the Philles record label with Lester Sill in the autumn of 1961 and thus began the years of his famous wall of sound. This came to an end in 1967.
His relationship with the Beatles had its ups and downs. In 1969 he turned the Get Back tapes into their swansong album Let it Be. During John Lennon's Lost Weekend, Spector worked with John on his Rock'n'Roll album. A time of misappropriated tapes, an unauthorised album release and many cross words.
Since then Phil Spector has worked with a host of artists including, Leonard Cohen and The Ramones.
In 2009 he was found guilty of the murder of Lana Clarkson. He died in 2021.
