How did each American State get it's name? So Arizona is kind of confusing, you see some people say it got it's name from the Spanish word meaning Arid Zone, Some say it's derived from the Aztec word Arizume meaning "silver bearing" as Silver was discovered here, while the most accepted theory is that it's name comes from the Papagos tribe of the Southwest which called it Arizonac, meaning "site of small springs". Illinois got it's name from a Native American word "Illini" meaning "men" or "warrior", When the French arrived they added the word "ios", hence the name Illinois. Vermong got it's name from a French explorer Samuel de Champlain, the same guy after whom the Champlain lake is named. When He arrived in Vermont he saw the Green Mountain Ranges and said "Vert Mont" which means "Green Mountains" in French, eventually the name became Vermont.
