On this day in 1984, ITN reported from Normandy as veterans, civilians, and heads of state of the Allied nations came together to mark the 40th anniversary of the largest amphibious landing in the history of human conflict. Operation Neptune, more commonly known as D-Day, saw a force of over 132,000 Allied soldiers land on the beaches of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France. The successful invasion would establish a second front against Nazi Germany, lead to the liberation of France, and open the way to Allied victory in the Second World War.

This special programme captured the anniversary through coverage of the day's official ceremonies as well as interviews with veterans of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, the United States, Canada, and the French Resistance. Part One features coverage of Queen Elizabeth II's journey to Bayeux, where they were to join French President Francois Mitterand in remembering the historic occasion. The programme focuses on the experiences of the British glider-borne troops of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry responsible for capturing the Pegasus Bridge, marking one of the first successes of the Normandy campaign.
