This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the hall effect. It explains how a hall effect sensor can be used to measure a magnetic field. It explains how to calculate the electric field across a conductor perpendicular to the current, how to determine the magnetic field, how to calculate the drift velocity of the electrons and the charge density given the hall emf induced by the magnetic field and the current flowing through the material. Whenever electrons flow through a conductor in the presence of a magnetic field, they began to drift to one side of the conductor creating a hall emf with an electric field that is perpendicular to the direction of the current. This hall emf can be used to measure the strength of a magnetic field. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems.
