Something interesting is happening in Togo. A few days ago, the citizens of Togo took to the streets of Togo to protest against the Togolese President who had seized power through a constitutional coup. Unlike the coups in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso which were accepted by the masses, the constitutional coup in Togo has been rejected by the people. Hence, the reason for the protests. Unfortunately, the government sent the police to stop the protests, leading to multiple arrests in the process. The question is why did the Togolese people reject the coup? And will their protest yield any result, let’s find out.

Recently, a coalition of civic groups and opposition leaders in Togo formed a new group in Togo known as the “Hands Off My Constitution”. This group was formed with respect to the constitutional coup that occurred in Togo. It's this group that organized the recent protests and even called for further protests. On Thursday 26th of June 2025 was the first day of the protest. That morning, small pockets of dozens of protesters blocked streets, burned tyres and wooden barricades in the capital, where many businesses remained closed. “I decided to shut everything down today in support of the protests that have started to liberate our country, because enough is enough. We want change," said Helene, a shopkeeper in the capital.
