In the song “Motorbike” Les Jeux Sont Funk give voice to a man who recalls a moment of his youth, a trip on a motorbike which, in its iconic but mysterious simplicity, conceals an experience of initiation.

The video was made exclusively with material from YouTube, an archive that was used as a Library of Babel and as a source for authorial reworking and re-editing. The collected footage has been altered almost frame by frame through slow motion, fast motion, and superimpositions (each sequence is made up of two to six different videos).

The memory of youth brings us to an era evoked by the aesthetic recreation of an ancient media landscape: the era of videotape, of which this music video mimics the grain and the low-resolution.

The collected and reworked videos are mainly “bike videos” uploaded onto YouTube between 2007 and 2015, POV videos shot in non-Western locations (Ghana, Tanzania, tropical islands,…). These are combined with some video tutorials, for instance the Indian “Learn to Drive a Bike” (Svtuition, 2012).

These videos, often shot with HD cameras or a GoPro, have been “impoverished”, messed up, deprived of the perfection of digital technology. This effect has been achieved also through a mash-up with other YouTube videos which show the physical deterioration of VHS, where tape was literally consumed by use.

The memory of a worn-out and obsolete medium is hence related to the telling of a story and to the metaphysical fragility of the lost world conjured up by “Motorbike”.

The authors of the original videos used for this derivative work are acknowledged as such in the final credits.

Nel brano Motorbike Les Jeux Sont Funk cedono la voce a un uomo che rievoca un piccolo ricordo di giovinezza, un viaggio in motocicletta che nella sua scarna ma misteriosa semplicità nasconde un'esperienza d'iniziazione.

Il video è realizzato esclusivamente tramite materiali tratti da YouTube, archivio utilizzato come biblioteca di Babele e come fonte di rielaborazione e rimontaggio autoriale. Il materiale raccolto è stato alterato quasi frame by frame tramite ralenti, accelerazioni e sovrimpressioni (ogni sequenza sovrappone da due a sei diversi video).

Il ricordo di giovinezza ci porta in un periodo storico evocato attraverso la ricreazione estetica di un antico panorama mediale: l'era della videocassetta, di cui il video mima la grana e la bassa definizione.

I video raccolti e rimontati sono soprattutto “video di moto” caricati su YouTube tra il 2007 e il 2015, girati in soggettiva e in ambientazioni non-occidentali (Ghana, Tanzania, isole tropicali…). A essi si aggiungono alcuni video-tutorial, ad esempio l'indiano Learn to Drive a Bike (Svtuition, 2012).

Questi video, spesso registrati con videocamere HD o con la GoPro, vengono “impoveriti”, sporcati, spogliati della perfezione tecnica del digitale. L'effetto è ottenuto anche tramite il mash-up con altri video YouTube che mostrano il deterioramento materiale del VHS, il cui nastro veniva letteralmente consumato dall'utilizzo.

La memoria di un supporto consunto e obsoleto si rapporta dunque con la narrazione di un ricordo e la metafisica fragilità del mondo perduto che Motorbike evoca.

Gli autori dei video originali da cui è tratta questa “opera derivata” vengono riconosciuti come tali nei titoli di coda.
