Thomas Crooks, once an engineering science student, led an almost invisible life. He was often seen alone, an outcast targeted by peers. Outside of his studies, Crooks worked at a nursing home, serving meals and washing dishes for $16 an hour. Before Trump's rally in Pennsylvania, he requested a day off on July 13th, telling his boss he had a big task going on that day.
On social media, Crooks announced that July 13th would be his "premiere," a forewarning of his planned attack. Known as an awkward yet intelligent teenager with an interest in computers, he armed himself with an AR-15 style rifle and went on his twisted way ready to do harm at the former commander and chief. Witnesses saw him crawling on a nearby roof with the rifle, alerting the police who initially seemed unaware of the threat.
Investigators have since uncovered troubling signs. Crooks had read about school shooters, received hazardous materials, and looked up information about Trump and Biden. However, they have yet to determine his motive. Although a registered Republican, Crooks had also donated to a Biden-related event, a mere 15 dollars. Neighbors described his family as private, with little indication of their political leanings. The reason behind Crooks' drastic actions remains a mystery as the FBI continues its investigation.
