On 10 January 1957, Harold Macmillan became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, following the resignation of Sir Anthony Eden. In a televised address, he paid tribute to his predecessor and stated his intention to form a cabinet. Robin Day reported from Number 11 on the items that the new prime minister would be taking with him to his new residence. Among them, a historic letter written by Winston Churchill to the war cabinet in the "dark days" of 1940. Out on the streets of the capital, Reginald Bosanquet asked members of the public how they felt about the nation's new leader.
