Who says that African countries cannot develop and build infrastructures without the help of the West? Well, that has been the narrative for a very long time. However, the countries in the Sahel region have begun to change this narrative under the leadership of the military leaders. Burkina Faso and Mali for instance recently reported that they had paid a huge amount of their domestic debt without the help of the West. And right now, Burkina Faso has just achieved another milestone with the inauguration of its first locally funded tomato factory. This is amazing. But how will this factory revolutionize Burkina Faso’s agricultural sector? Let's find out.
According to recent reports, President Traore inaugurated Burkina Faso’s first locally funded tomato processing factory. You see, one of the core visions of Traore’s administration is to transform Burkina Faso’s agricultural sector. According to reports, Burkina Faso’s agricultural sector engages eighty to ninety percent of the Burkinabe population. This means that agriculture is the backbone of the Burkinabe’s economy contributing about 30 to 40 percent to the GDP. However, Traore realized that just like most African countries, Burkina Faso has not fully developed its agricultural sector. Specifically, in 2021, Burkina Faso produced 290,000 tonnes of tomatoes yet much of it was sold at exploitative prices, and much more was wasted as a result of a lack of proper storage facilities.
