On 7 July 1965, ITN's Sandy Gall reported from Saigon, the capital of the Republic of Vietnam, some four months after the United States escalated its involvement in the Vietnam War by deploying Marines to Da Nang. Gall reported on struggle of the US-backed government to maintain an open, vibrant atmosphere amidst its efforts to combat the ongoing Viet Cong insurgency. While the shops, bars and clubs had what Gall called an 'American' feel, the public executions of Viet Cong guerrillas and the Viet Cong's bombing campaign targeting the American presence made the ongoing war impossible to ignore.
