Here are 3 levels of hot dogs.
Level 1: Standard Hot Dog
This one is as basic as it comes. Pre-packaged hot dog, standard bun, and some cheap-@ss yellow mustard.
If it wasn't for this video, you'd never catch me eating one of these.
Level 2: Detroit-Style Coney Dog
Make a basic chili sauce with just beef (no beans) and set aside.
Start with boiling your hot dogs in water infused with cilantro and garlic. Place a wire rack over the top of the pot and steam your buns at the same time.
Assemble your coney dogs with a generous helping of chili, yellow mustard, and diced raw onions.
As a Detroiter, this one hits different. I think we can still do better, though.
Level 3: The Ultimate Hot Dog
Steam/boil your hot dogs as we did in Level 2 but then put them in a pan or grill to give them some color.
Grill your bun and get some color/char on that, too. Trust me.
Make your mustard sauce by combining dijon, yellow mustard, mayo, relish, diced pickled jalapeños, a little salt, a dash of white wine vinegar, and a spoonful of D75 roasted jalapeño ketchup.
Assemble your hot dogs with your homemade sauce, some caramelized onions, and some sweet pickled jalapeños and prepare to be knocked on your @ss.
Labor Day weekend is coming up, so definitely give this recipe a try. I promise you're going to be hooked.
