Improvising can be many things from noodling around, jamming on a chord progression, to composing soundtracks for pretend movies or responding to a mood… In my teaching, I focus on improvising within the context of a tune. That means I teach the “nuts & bolts” creative concepts such as how to arrange lead sheets on the fly by applying layers and stock accompaniment styles such as swing, Latin, and rock, to extend short tunes into on-the-spot full arrangements.
