Southern Soldier Boy was written by Captain G.W. Alexander in 1863. It is sung from the perspective of a women whose "sweetheart", named Bob Roebuck, is in the Confederate Army. She tells of the emotions that come with the separation from Bob, the sadness she would feel if he was killed in battle, and her hopes for the future.
Research into the origins of the song indicate it was performed by an actress named Sallie Partington shortly after it was written, being performed in Richmond in the popular Confederate play "The Virginia Cavalier."
