The music in the video is from my latest full-length album: Directional - "Invasive".
Songs used: "A Dead Tree Greets No Spring" and "Cutting a Wound Into Healthy Flesh".
- In order to get such a deep mahogany finish on such a light color wood, I sanded the body with an Extremely coarse 40 grit sandpaper. This helped the stain to penetrate very deeply into the wood, and I basically drenched the wood until it couldn't absorb any more stain color. I let it dry for 5 days after that. Then I put on very thin coats of Tru Oil, (in the video, it says 25, but it was probably over 30 coats, I stopped counting). Every coat was just 5-6 drops of tru-oil spread super thin over the surface. I needed this many coats to even out the rough surface. I leveled out the tru oil with 0000 steel wool every 5 coats. Most people use a finer sanding grit before they stain their guitars, and thats what I did for the first version of the stain, I used 240 grit. (wood pickguard version). But the grit of the sandpaper limits the darkness of the stain, and no matter how much stain you apply, it will never be as dark as if you use coarser sandpaper.
- It's a shame that I couldn't use the custom wooden pickguard in the end, because I really liked that look. But I can't sacrifice tone just for looks. There is a cavity in the guitar, under the pickguard where all the electronics are, it creates a resonance that makes this guitar sound the way it does. And the wooden plate was affecting this tone.
