Public nuisance, poor waste management cause suffering to people in Dhaka

Public nuisance, haphazard dumping of waste on roads and lanes by waste collectors under two city corporations in Bangladesh capital Dhaka were causing pollutions and public sufferings, city dwellers said.
People in general also throw away wastes in open places indiscriminately along with the waste collectors with the authorities rarely taking any action against the act.
Experts have blamed the lack of coordination among the agencies concerned, the tendency of people not abiding law and the lack of awareness of the situation in the capital city.
The authorities, according to them, are far from creating an ideal waste management system to reduce public sufferings and protect the environment from pollutions.
Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon general secretary Sharif Jamil said that city waste should be managed in a coordinated way to reduce public sufferings. ‘There is a lack of coordination among the stakeholders,’ he said,
He said that there was a tussle between the city corporations and the department of the environment over waste management and finally the city corporations were given the responsibility.
