Q&A with Tristan Myatt:
🗣️ How long have you been collecting and mixing for?
I started collecting CDs when I was around 10/11 years old, there was a second-hand music shop in Macclesfield I’d usually buy them from. I was probably 14 when I made my first CD mixtape, I’d just listen to them in the car and occasionally make some for friends. I started buying vinyl in my early 20s, and I’ve been learning to mix for 3-4 years.
🗣️ What sparked your interest in digging/collecting?
Music that leaves an impression on me forces my hand, I just want to hold it. I've been very fortunate with a handful of musically affirming opportunities. Spending time living in Amsterdam and fluking a volunteer role on a brilliant corner festival tent were two very inspiring experiences.
🗣️ Where do you find your music?
Usually online, YouTube and Bandcamp are great for me to just get lost in and stumble upon music. There's a curator channel called Sound Station Strategy on YouTube, which is usually my first port of call. I'll also try and see as much live music as my energy levels allow me. Small town charity shops have always proven quite fruitful for me, Porthmadog in Wales has provided me with some stellar 90s techno and drum and bass.
🗣️ Any label/artist/collective recommendations for someone to start digging?
Labels - Mysticisms in London, Isle Of Jura in Adelaide, & Bordello A Parigi in Amsterdam are three of my favorites.
Artists - I'm currently into Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band, Neve Cariad, Elliott Smith, and Mi Mye.
Collectives - Bodies In Motion/Fresh Junk, Cosmic Slop, Lick Quid Gold, Love Muscle, Alto, Lift Your Feet, Friday Feeling, Dman & Friends, Pleasure Maxxx, Natural Selection, Truelove, Endless City.
🗣️ Is there anyone that you take inspiration from? If so, who and why?
"Inspiration comes first" - Rick Rubin's words, not mine - but I like them! There’s a lot of collectors and DJs I admire—DJ Bone, Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy, Antal, and Eris Drew, to name a few. I’m very fortunate to be living in Leeds and surrounded by such talented people. Being able to see friends do their thing so well gives me a lot of hope!
