Why Maps Always Put UK In The Center? #shorts

Why do world maps almost always put the United Kingdom at the center? And why not the
United States or Australia or India or any other countries?
Well, modern maps are based on the Mercator projection, created in 1569 by Gerardus
Mercator, a Flemish cartographer. This map was designed for navigation during the age of
exploration. And at that time, European powers, like the UK, dominated global trade.
To make navigation easier, they placed Europe—and specifically the Prime Meridian, which runs
through Greenwich, London—right in the middle. In 1884, an international conference officially
established the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, making it the ‘zero’ point for longitude. This
cemented the UK’s central role in maps worldwide.
But remember—maps are human creations. If you look at maps from China, Australia, or even
the US, you’ll see their own countries placed in the center. They’re a reminder of who held
influence when they were made.
