Almost all city buses, including the CNG-run buses, in Dhaka and Chattogram continued to charge more than 50 per cent higher than the previous fares for the second day although the government increased the fares by around 27 per cent for diesel-run vehicles.
Bus passengers in Dhaka city said that they were forced to pay beyond the increased fares that came into effect on Monday as they had no other means to travel.
To prevent the collection of extra fare and irrigularities, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s executive magistrates conducted mobile courts at places in the city.
While conducting a mobile court in front of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority executive magistrate Firoza Parvin told New Age that she fined a CNG-run bus for taking extra fares claiming that it was a diesel-run bus.
‘We have already issued directives that CNG-run buses cannot take the latest increased fares meant for diesel-run buses. We have asked all buses to put a sticker on whether a bus is running on diesel or CNG,’ she added.
BRTA officials said that 11,900 buses and minibuses, or 95 per cent of 12,526 buses and minibuses in Dhaka city were CNG-run.
