Security cameras are often more useful than just for plain video based surveillance, and that's where audio comes in. The microphone in the kit is highly sensitive and has been tested to reliably record audio up to 30 feet away in quiet conditions. In some scenarios, like when we tested it in our echo-y warehouse, it can pick up some audio from as far away as 70 feet. And the speaker is no slouch either, it can produce loud sound and, for most people, should be audible from the same distance the microphone is able to hear.
