After a myriad of checks and confirmations, Taye placed his index finger gently under a bold red switch and clicked it upwards. Taye’s seat rumbled beneath him as the machine whirred to life. He could see its propeller circling faster and faster, passing over the top of the window’s view in front of him. “Now, or never” he thought. With his right foot resting on the accelerator and his hands firmly clasped to the cyclic propped between his knees, he took a deep breath, and began to fly.
The machine lifted from the ground with a loud cry, spewing the dirt from beneath it in every direction. Wind from the propellers sent the greenery in the surrounding field blowing violently, grasping the earth as if to desperately stay in place. With a wide eyed grin, Taye felt himself rising, rising, rising. A laugh exploded from his mouth as if melded with a joyous scream and he knew, he had done it.
As he peered out the window to gaze upon the now distant ground, his smile faded and he felt his stomach churn into a twisted knot. There seemed a glistening film between him and the earth now departed. Through it Taye could see the green of the area mold to a dark crimson. Wooden utility poles began tilting and nearby homes glitched into non-existence. And just as his heart sank in a petrified confusion, the machine’s power began dwindling. With an error alert resounding loudly within the cockpit, Taye anxiously began a risky descent, now towards a place completely unknown.
The machine’s feet slammed against the ground as the final remaining power was sucked from its engines. And as its propellers gradually slowed, Taye sat in the still protection of the cockpit. After some time, he cracked the door open and carefully emerged from the now deadened vessel. The smell in the air was odd and the feel of the atmosphere around him had changed. He couldn’t identify it. It was just, different. He stepped down from his commander’s chair and crunched his feet into the gravel below, now of a land completely different from the one he had departed from. He could no longer hear the sounds of birds or nearby townlife, but instead was met with an intrusive silence and a sinking feeling of being completely stranded and alone.
Taye knew nothing would be accomplished by cowering about the machine, so he took a final look at his creation, turned towards the strange wilderness, and began walking.
