Much like the so-called early gothic movement who were un-afraid to experiment, Velatine shifts its music from what's expected, working with different lead vocalists [this one features Nocturna again] and weaving aspects from his favourite genres of Gothic, Darkwave, Post-Punk, Industrial and more Velatine becomes hard to define as one style. Merging this range of influences absorbed over his years involved in performance and production in the music industry certainly makes for an eclectic listening experience and perhaps not what might be expected at first glance.
About the Song:
Till Death We Do Art is for the creatives of the world, the never ending circle an artist must orbit, the highs and lows that they endure, to follow their destiny regardless, until they are no more.
It's the life of being creative, an addiction to being better than your last effort. The highs are high, and the lows can be devastating but the search for meaning continues to propel them regardless. It’s about giving over your creation and making it public. The battle to get it where you feel it’s ready to share has been fought and regardless of what anyone thinks, you brace yourself for separation. The romance you once had slips away, there can be no further change and you know the happier you are with your work, the bigger the fall will be. It’s time to move forward but your attempts are laced with self doubt, you think that you’ll never create anything meaningful again, that this was your peak! Like death, you’re mourning and no matter how hard you try to restart, the next peak seems so far away. Then little flashes of ideas start to accumulate in your head and you know that it’s your destiny to start the cycle again.
Dedicated to:
This song is dedicated to Ksenia, a painter from Ukraine who was sharing Velatine’s music with her art on Instagram well before we were active in that space. Through this I got to know her a little, but as an Australian, in a country far from conflict it was the first time I knew someone living in the midst of war. Having that ever present threat as part of your life, disruption to normality, what we take for granted here and the devastation of losing her lover I found her often in my thoughts. If I didn’t see her post, I’d check to see if she was alive. This song was largely written before all this, but the chorus was incomplete. One time I looked to see how she was and her Instagram tag jumped out at me, "Till Death We Do Art," it was the missing piece that summed up the emotion of the song so well. I’d read these words before on her page but this time I saw them in a new light, I knew immediately where they also belonged. Everything fell into place and the last lines, “we’re upset by war, and worry for them all” are for her.
