Opera (VR 700) in three acts, dedicated to Count Giacomo Brivio, successfully premiered at the Teatro San Angelo in Venice on October 27, 1716.
In the autumn of 1715, Vivaldi had seemed excluded from the direction of the Teatro San Angelo, in favor of the impresario Pietro Denzio. The creation of Arsilda at the San Angelo appears as a de facto takeover, even if Denzio had been replaced as impresario by the former singer Pietero Ramponi.
The libretto had been submitted to censorship as early as 1715, but the The unfavorable opinion led to a new version which was approved on October 18, 1716. Vivaldi himself reworked the libretto and the result was a lasting rivalry with the librettist Domenico Lalli. Characters:
Arsilda, Queen of Pontus, in love with Tamese
Lisea, presumed dead, disguised as Tamese, her twin brother presumed lost at sea, in love with Barzane
Tamese, King of Cilicia, disguised as a gardener, in love with Arsilda
Barzane, King of Lydia , in love with Lisea then Arsilda
Mirinda, royal princess, confidante of Lisea
Nicandro, prince of Bythinia, confidante and ally of Tamese
Cisardo, paternal uncle of Tamese and Lisea, regent.
