On Monday (26th September 2022), NASA's DART spacecraft made history as it carried out a test of ramming into an asteroid 7 million miles from Earth. DART had only one instrument on board.
This was the DRACO camera and it sent its last images to Earth.
The images were obtained by the dart spacecraft seconds before impact and reveal the surface of the asteroid called Dimorphos. In closeup detail.
After flying in space for 10 months, NASA intentionally crashed the DART spacecraft into an asteroid at roughly 14,000 miles per hour to slightly slow the asteroid's orbital speed.
NASA states that the mission's success provides a significant addition to the essential toolbox we as humans must have to protect earth from a devastating impact by an asteroid.
The DART mission demonstrates we are no longer powerless to prevent this type of natural disaster.
