On this particular day in Pyongyang, something felt different. Unlike the usual rigidly guided tours, we were allowed to walk freely down the streets, almost like locals. While we were still advised not to enter shops or interact with street vendors, there was a certain sense of freedom—no strict path to follow, no rush to the next stop. Just a walk, in the rain, among North Koreans going about their day.
The scene was calm yet lively. People with umbrellas strolled along the wet pavement, dressed in dark clothing typical of Pyongyang. The sidewalk was lined with lush green trees, their trunks painted white at the base—a common practice for pest control and aesthetics. The pavement was hexagonally tiled, slightly wet from the rain, reflecting the soft gray sky above.
A blue trolleybus, an iconic mode of transportation in Pyongyang, made its way down the street, its overhead wires connecting it to the city's electric grid. The buildings in the background had a uniform, Soviet-style aesthetic, with modest signage in Korean, hinting at small businesses and offices. There was a quiet rhythm to everything—people walking with purpose but not in a hurry, a city moving at its own pace.
Walking here, unescorted in a way, gave a rare glimpse into everyday life—one that tourists almost never experience.
