Diesel-electric submarines of project 214 - German production, are being built at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW). The submarine is equipped with a diesel propulsion system combined with an air-independent propulsion system (AIP) based on Siemens polymer electrolytic membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. The Type 214 is based on Project 212A submarines, however, due to the fact that the boats are intended for export, they do not use some of the secret technologies used on its ancestor, the most important of which is a non-magnetic steel hull, which makes the Type 212 invisible to magnetic anomaly detectors.

The Republic of Korea Navy has ordered nine Type 214 submarines, naming them the Son Won-Il class, but stipulated that they be built in Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. The first three boats began service in 2007, and the second batch of six units will begin to enter the fleet in 2012.

Armament: 8 533 mm bow torpedoes, 12 DM-2A3 "Seehecht" and DM-2A4 torpedoes, up to 24 bottom and up to 36 anchor mines instead of torpedoes
