On September 5, 1982 Frankie M. Shivers was attempting to assist a woman who was involved in a car accident when she was shot.
The incident originally started when another officer initiated a traffic stop. While writing a citation, a car slammed into that officer’s police cruiser. The vehicle that caused the crash burst into flames and the driver was thrown into the backseat. Officer Shivers responded to the crash as backup and attempted to rescue the woman who was inside the burning vehicle. As Officer Shivers tried to save the woman's life, the woman grabbed officer Shiver's revolver and shot her several times. A shoot-out then ensued and the woman was killed. Officer Shivers died the following day on September 6, 1982.
The investigation revealed that the woman had intentionally hit the police cruiser in an attempt to kill herself. Shivers was honored posthumously as Officer of the Year for 1982. We will never forget how Officer Shivers paid the ultimate sacrifice for the city and citizens she loved.
