Team members can make or break energy efficiency initiatives in commercial buildings. If employees are not engaged in energy conservation, it won’t happen. In this Bonus Scene of Better Buildings Challenge SWAP (), brought to you by the U.S. Department of Energy, hear from the Hilton Worldwide and Whole Foods Market teams about the importance and benefits of team member engagement in energy efficiency.

Commercial buildings and industrial plants account for 50% of our nation’s primary energy use and cost about $400 billion annually to power/operate. The Better Buildings Challenge is aimed at achieving the goal of doubling American energy productivity by 2030 while motivating corporate and public-sector leaders across the country to save energy through commitments and investments. More than 285 organizations are partnering with the Energy Department to achieve 20 percent portfolio-wide energy savings and share successful strategies that maximize efficiency over the next decade. Across the country, partners have shared energy data for more than 32,000 properties and are reporting energy savings of 20 percent or more at 4,500 properties, and 10 percent or more at 12,000 properties.

Team member engagement is obviously extremely important to Whole Foods Market. Our customers are intrigued by what we’re doing, our team members are extremely excited about energy efficiency and renewables and really just being an overall steward of the environment, so getting them involved is, is extremely exciting for us.

Team members make the difference, you know, team members are on the frontline. They make a difference with our guests, they deliver the service and the service is the differentiating factor for the hospitality industry. But they also make a difference as it relates to energy conservation. If the team members aren’t engaged and they’re not there and they don’t care, it won’t happen.

Remember when a guest in an occupied room hangs their towel, don’t change their towel

We talk with the team on a weekly basis about energy conservation to keep them active, in the program, especially the Housekeeping Department, because they’re in all 1900 of our guest rooms every day and they have the ability to turn lights out, to report leaky faucets, to adjust the heating and air conditioning, based on the time of year, report any door seals or window seals that are leaking.

Behavioral changes, we found, can make up for about five to ten percent of the efficiency measures that we can implement in a store. We could throw all the technology at all these problems that we see or find – but, without the engagement of our team members, we’re never going to get there.
