Lets be honest the genre had its fair share of cheese & bandwagon jumping, hardcore rap heads hated it, pure house heads hated it…..so who liked it? well I did and a hell of a lot of others did as well.
Was it a reaction to the seriousness that the rap world had headed into? or an escape from the nerdy 303 knob twiddling of the underground acid house scene. It was silly, unintelligent, novelty music which deep down we all knew was a passing fad BUT for a brief moment in time it was everywhere.
It was club music and didn’t hide from that fact and at its peak in 89 Hip House was getting absolutely hammered all over the world.
This mix (whilst not definitive as it was just what Copycat had on vinyl & what worked for the mix) is a snapshot of that fleeting stage in the evolution of club music in all its glory, warts & all.
Sit back turn up the bass, & rok da house…..corny but fitting.
