A new dawn is arising in the region. Formerly, under the grip of Western influence and power, particularly France, the Sahel region has taken a new turn. This is all thanks to the military leaders of the Sahel countries. Their departure from the old order has made other Sahel countries that used to be puppets of France, to chnage as well. Recently, the President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Deby paid a visit to Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, where he met with President Traore. Both leaders engaged in mutual discussions regarding the future of both countries. But what entails their discussion? And what is the future of Chad and Burkina Faso’s relationship? Let’s find out.

If anyone had said that Chad would one day distance itself from France, no one would have believed it. For over one hundred and forty years, France ruled Chad unofficially with the help of its military. France gladly supported the corrupt and undemocratic government of Chad because it wanted to maintain control. For instance, in the 1960s and 70s, France intervened in support of Chadian government forces that were battling against the Frolinat. In 1982 Hissene Habré came to power with French support. When the late Chad president, Idriss Deby orchestrated a coup to overthrow Habre and take over power, France did not interfere.

In fact, France supported him and continued to support him for 38 years until his death. Isn't this hypocritical of France? This same France that supported a coup, turned around to condemn the coup in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Now, some people might say that, perhaps that is the old French leadership. Well, they are wrong.

In 2021, Chad’s former President, Idriss Deby was killed in the battlefront from rebels’ shelling. After his death, President Macron himself was responsible for helping his son who is now the current president of Chad to take over power through a military coup. But he was not just responsible for the coup in secret, Macron endorsed it publicly, claiming that the military takeover was necessary for security reasons. Macron ignored the voice of the people and supported the current President’s transition to power. This was because Macron needed to maintain French influence and military bases in the country.
