You’ve probably heard the Bible story or song about Zacchaeus, the short tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus. But there may be a surprising twist to this familiar tale. The Gospel of Luke says that Zacchaeus “could not see Jesus because he was short in stature.” The question is: who is being described as short? Most assume it’s Zacchaeus, but the Greek text allows for a different interpretation—that Jesus himself might have been short.

In his paper The Little Messiah, Dr. Isaac Soon argues that the Greek grammar suggests "he" refers to Jesus, not Zacchaeus.
