On 16, 17, and 18 September 1982, between 1,300 and 3,500 civilians were killed by the Lebanese Forces, one of Lebanon’s most powerful Christian militias, in the West Beirut neighbourhood of Sabra. Targeting Palestinians in the Shatila refugee camp and their Lebanese Shia neighbours, the Lebanese Forces were found to have been supported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) surrounding Sabra. Two separate commissions, the independent MacBride Commission and the Israeli Knesset's Kahan Commission, found the IDF to be responsible for the events. MacBride held the IDF directly responsible as the occupying power over the area, while the Kahan Commission blamed the IDF indirectly for their failure to intervene once they had received reports of the killings.

This compilation charts the progress of the investigations into the Sabra and Shatila massacre. It begins with Brent Sadler's report from West Beirut recorded two days after the killing stopped, on 20 September 1982. Derek Taylor's report of 24 November 1982 covers the Kahan Commission's preliminary findings, in particular the charges of responsibility levelled at Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Defence Minister Ariel Sharon, and other senior officials. A News at Ten report from 8 February 1983 looks at Sabra and Shatila six months after the massacre, and is followed by Peter Sissons' interview with Ehud Olmert, a Knesset member belonging to Menachem Begin's Likud Party, on the published findings of the Kahan Commission. The final report sees ITN's David Smith return to Sabra on the first anniversary of the massacre to interview survivors.
